Rebuilding Sichuan –
The Beginning of a Long Journey

May of 2008 brought great tragedy to China’s Sichuan Province, as an earthquake that measured 8.0M created ripples of mass destruction across the region. An estimated 70,000 people were killed, and today, over 5 million displaced survivors struggle to reconstruct their lives. In addition to the loss of human lives, there has been significant damage in livestock, agriculture, property, and infrastructure. The process of rebuilding Sichuan will take several years and cost billions of dollars.

“SUNY-China 150” Fundraising Dinner

On September 18, the China Earthquake Rebuilding Fund and the Chinese-American Planning Council hosted the SUNY-China 150 Fundraising Dinner.

100 tables were donated to raise funds to benefit: SUNY-China 150, a fund that will cover costs of educating and housing 150 students from the affected Sichuan Province at various campuses of the State University of New York. The program will provide these students with valuable leadership training to prepare them to return to China to assist with rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Over 300 attendees showed their support for the fundraising event.  Amongst the attendees were 19 of the 150 SUNY students who will benefit from the fundraiser, SUNY representatives, corporate sponsors, and media representatives.  The evening was filled with lively speeches and performances.  The students got a chance to share about their experiences in the United States and their rewarding education at SUNY.  Students from China presented a video of their new school life in SUNY as Thomas Moebus, VP for Development at the Levine Graduate Institute of the State University System, joined them in singing “New York, New York”.
